Mouse DPI Measurement Methodology

A repeatable physical-distance protocol for estimating true mouse DPI and understanding browser measurement uncertainty.

What this method can establish

This method estimates counts per inch from pointer travel and a measured physical mouse distance. It can reveal configuration error or DPI deviation, but it is not a calibrated sensor bench.

Browser limitations

1.Browser coordinates can be affected by OS pointer acceleration, scaling, zoom, and event coalescing.
2.Screen pixel density is not mouse DPI. The result depends on accurate on-screen calibration and an accurate physical ruler measurement.
3.The browser cannot identify sensor smoothing, angle snapping, counts skipped outside the page, or firmware-level corrections with laboratory certainty.

Repeatable protocol

1.Set browser zoom to 100%, use the analyzer calibration control, and disable pointer acceleration or enhanced pointer precision.
2.Mark a straight 10 cm or 4 inch path on the mousepad. Longer distances reduce ruler and hand-position error.
3.Place a consistent reference point on the mouse at the start mark, begin capture, move slowly in one direction, then stop exactly at the end mark.
4.Run at least five trials without changing DPI or pointer settings. Discard obvious handling mistakes and report the median of the remaining trials.

How to interpret results

1.Treat a tight group of repeated measurements as stronger evidence than the closest single result.
2.A modest difference from the selected DPI can be normal sensor variance. A large, repeatable difference usually points to acceleration, scaling, calibration, or an unexpected DPI stage.
3.Keep distance, direction, surface, settings, and reference point identical when comparing firmware or DPI steps.

Privacy

The calculation runs locally from pointer coordinates and the distance you enter. No movement trace, hardware serial number, or result upload is required.
