Understanding Mouse DPI and Sensitivity

DPI is one of the most marketed specs of a gaming mouse, but what does it actually mean?

What is DPI?

DPI stands for Dots Per Inch. It measures how many pixels your cursor moves on screen for every inch you move your mouse on the desk.

  • Low DPI (400-800): You need to move your arm more. Common in tactical shooters like CS2.
  • High DPI (1600-3200+): Small wrist movements move the cursor across the screen. Good for MOBA/RTS or multi-monitor setups.

eDPI: The Real Sensitivity

Your in-game sensitivity is a combination of your mouse DPI and the game's sensitivity setting.

eDPI = DPI × In-Game Sensitivity

This is why two players can have the same "speed" even if one uses 400 DPI and the other uses 800 DPI (if the second player halves their in-game sens).

Is Higher DPI Better?

Technically, higher DPI provides smoother tracking and lower latency, but diminishing returns hit hard after 1600 DPI. Most pros stick to 400, 800, or 1600.

Don't Know Your DPI?

If you have a generic mouse without software, you might not know your DPI. Use our analyzer tool to estimate it.
