Keyboard Testing Methodology

A repeatable browser protocol for checking key registration, rollover, chatter, and event timing without overclaiming latency.

What this method can establish

This method checks whether browser key events arrive in the expected sequence and combinations. It can expose repeatable functional faults, but it cannot fully characterize switch physics, firmware scans, or end-to-end latency.

Browser limitations

1.The operating system and browser may intercept shortcuts, repeat held keys, normalize codes, or delay events under load.
2.A browser event timestamp is not a direct measurement of switch debounce, scan rate, USB polling, or physical-to-photon latency.
3.Keyboard layout, input method, accessibility features, remote sessions, and wireless conditions can change observed behavior.

Repeatable protocol

1.Select the correct layout, close applications that register global shortcuts, focus the test, and record connection mode and relevant keyboard settings.
2.Press and release every key once, then repeat suspect keys 50 times at a steady cadence to check for missing or duplicate events.
3.Test common gaming and work combinations, increasing simultaneous keys gradually for rollover checks. Avoid OS-reserved shortcuts.
4.Run three complete trials. Reconnect or change one variable at a time when diagnosing a failure, and repeat the same sequence after each change.

How to interpret results

1.A fault is meaningful when the same key or combination fails repeatedly while controls pass. One missed browser event is not enough to condemn hardware.
2.Duplicate events during deliberate single presses can suggest chatter, but OS repeat settings and technique must be ruled out first.
3.Describe browser results as observed event behavior, not as measured hardware latency or certified rollover capability.

Privacy

The tester processes key events locally and does not need to transmit typed content. Use only the dedicated test area and never enter passwords or other sensitive text while testing.
