Lift-Off Distance (LOD) is the height at which your mouse sensor stops tracking when you lift it off the pad. If this is too high, your cursor will jitter uncontrollably every time you reposition your mouse.
The community standard for measuring LOD is by stacking standard compact discs (CDs/DVDs), which have a thickness of 1.2mm each, until the sensor stops tracking.
1 CD (or less): Excellent. Ideal for competitive FPS gaming.
2+ CDs: High. You may experience cursor jitter when lifting the mouse.
For FPS gaming, you want an LOD under 1 CD (1.2mm). This ensures that when you lift your mouse to reset position, your crosshair stays locked on target instead of looking at the floor.
Most modern gaming mice (Razer, Logitech, Pulsar) have a 'Mousepad Calibration' or 'Lift-off' setting in their software. Set this to 'Low' or '1mm'.
