Cursor Snaps or Drifts Because Another Input Device Is Taking Control

Find a pen display, touchpad, touchscreen, controller, or other HID device that is moving the Windows pointer.

Quick diagnosis

If the cursor still moves with the mouse unplugged, another human-interface device or input utility is controlling it.

Common symptoms

Cursor snaps repeatedly to one coordinate.
A second mouse has the same problem.
Movement stops when a tablet, controller, or touchpad is disabled.

Likely causes

An absolute-position pen or touch device reporting a fixed point.
A drifting controller stick.
A damaged laptop touchpad.
Remote-control or mapping software injecting input.

Before changing anything

Save work because pointer control may be temporarily lost.
Know how to navigate Settings with the keyboard.
List all connected input-capable devices.

Diagnose it in this order

Unplug or switch off the mouse. If movement continues, do not reinstall its driver.

Remove pen displays, drawing tablets, and touchscreen USB data connections one at a time.
