Balance normal Windows apps and desktop content against HDR without misusing monitor brightness or peak-HDR calibration.
Windows tone-maps SDR content into the HDR desktop signal. Adjust the SDR content brightness control for the selected HDR display, then restart apps that do not update.
Open Settings → System → Display, choose the HDR-capable monitor, then open HDR settings.
Move the SDR content brightness/HDR-SDR balance gradually while viewing a normal desktop app.
Some SDR applications do not update until closed and reopened.
Remove stale test profiles and use the intended HDR picture mode before calibrating.

Use Windows HDR Calibration for black level, peak luminance, and saturation; do not treat SDR brightness as peak-HDR calibration.
It primarily changes the relative appearance of SDR content within the HDR signal; use HDR calibration for the display’s HDR luminance behavior.
