Fixing Mouse Double-Clicking Issues

If your mouse registers a single press as a double click, software or hardware may be to blame. Follow these steps to check settings, clean the hardware, verify power and update drivers on all major operating systems.

Curious why this is happening?

Hardware wear, static, and low debounce times are common culprits.Read our detailed explanation here.

Windows

  1. Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Mouse and use the Additional mouse options link.
  2. On the Buttons tab, move the Double-click speed slider and test. Very low values can cause accidental double clicks.
  3. Clean the primary buttons with compressed air or isopropyl alcohol. Remove debris around the switches.
  4. Replace batteries or try a different USB port or cable.
  5. Update or reinstall your mouse driver in Device Manager.

macOS

  1. Open System Settings → Mouse and adjust the Double-Click speed slider. Ensure it is not set too slow.
  2. Clean the buttons and check the mouse on another surface.
  3. Replace or recharge the battery and reconnect the mouse over USB or Bluetooth.
  4. Install available macOS or manufacturer software updates.

🐧 Linux

Note: Linux systems handle debounce at the driver level differently than Windows/macOS.
  1. Linux handles debounce via libinput automatically. Run libinput debug-events or xev to confirm hardware chatter.
  2. There is no system setting to fix switch chatter. Update firmware with fwupd, use Piper/Solaar, or clean the switches.
